Background of the Study
Urbanization is rapidly transforming social landscapes by altering economic, cultural, and familial structures. In Enugu East, traditional marriage customs are increasingly affected by the forces of urbanization. As cities expand and lifestyles modernize, conventional marriage rituals and practices face erosion, with younger generations adopting new approaches influenced by urban culture (Nwachukwu, 2023). The migration from rural to urban areas exposes communities to diverse cultures and values, often leading to a decline in the adherence to traditional marriage ceremonies and customs (Okafor, 2024). This shift is accompanied by changes in gender roles, family dynamics, and societal expectations, challenging the preservation of cultural heritage. Recent studies reveal that urbanization can result in a redefinition of marriage customs, where modern practices overshadow traditional values (Ebele, 2025). This study investigates the extent to which urbanization influences traditional marriage customs, aiming to document these changes and propose ways to balance modernity with cultural preservation.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional marriage customs in Enugu East are under threat due to rapid urbanization. The influx of modern cultural influences is gradually eroding longstanding marriage rituals and family practices (Nwachukwu, 2023). This cultural shift has led to a decline in traditional ceremonies and altered gender roles, creating tensions between generations (Okafor, 2024). Despite these changes, there is limited systematic research on how urbanization is impacting marriage customs in the region. This study aims to address this gap by examining the relationship between urban growth and the transformation of traditional marriage practices (Ebele, 2025).
